Description

What follows is a sort of "rhetoric of geography": an analysis and critique of the environmental and scientific discourse on the Diamond Bar Ranch, one hundred acres of private land commanding livestock access to almost 145,000 acres of public wilderness and a center of environmental conflict in the Southwest during the 1990s. The intention is to take note of the discourse of scientists, range managers, environmental groups, and the United States Forest Service (USFS) to show how the reality of the environmental conflict surrounding the Diamond Bar was constructed by the rhetoric surrounding it. To accomplish this, I construct a narrative of conflict--both scientific and political--and engage it with critique at key points. I hope that the result both suggests the ecological substance of the conflict and reflects the way it is shaped and conducted as a "War of Words" (Christensen 1997). Beginning with a description of the ranch's physical setting in the Gila Wilderness, I go on to critique a representative sampling of current ecological research results on grazing effects and the contrary rhetoric of USFS goals for the land. I then narrate the history of the Diamond Bar conflict and point to the problems that grazing raises for the ecological health of wilderness areas. The conclusion engages and critiques the discourse that has served to characterize the nature of this environmental conflict.
